# Local network access

There are two local networks in play once you are connected, and it is worth
being precise about which one a setting affects.

**Your home network** — the one your vploq sits on. Reaching it is the entire
point of the product, and it works by default.

**The network you are physically on right now** — a hotel Wi-Fi, an office
LAN. By default, while the tunnel is up, devices on *that* network are not
reachable.

## The setting

**Preferences → Local network access** controls the second one. Turn it on if
you need to reach a printer in the room you are sitting in while staying
connected to your home network.

Changes apply after you reconnect. Toggle it, then disconnect and connect
again.

## Why it is off by default

The network you are on is not one you control. An open café network can see
what your device exposes, and leaving the local path open there is a
meaningfully larger surface than leaving it closed. Your home network stays
reachable either way, so the default costs you nothing in normal use.

## On iOS and macOS

The operating system asks separately for permission to talk to devices on the
local network. If you turned the setting on and still cannot reach anything,
check that the permission was granted — the app cannot grant it for you.
